Can you be a broke college student and still be fashionable? The answer is yes. I know right, it might come to a surprise to most of you, but there is a way.
As most of you guys know, I am in college. I am a junior at the University of Northern Colorado. I love fashion, and want to always be "in trend" and have new clothes to mix and match with. That is not always realistic though. Trust me, it gets hard seeing a lot of influencers constantly getting new clothes and doing hauls.
As someone who is young and barely makes money, I have found ways around this. In today's blog post, I wanted to share some tips on what to buy and some of my favorite places to shop.
Tips
1. Fast Fashion
I want to talk about fast fashion briefly. There are a lot of trends that come and go very fast. For example, a lot of the crazy tops or pants that are not considered to be basics, I would not waste my money on. Instead, go for more basic items that you know you can get a lot of wear out of.
2. Buy clothing you will actually wear
Only buy clothing that you know you will wear. I know this can be hard, because you may think to yourself "yes I will definitely wear this". Trust me, I have done this many times, and then the clothing item ends up sitting in my closet. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself if you already have something in your closet you can wear the item with. Since we are on a budget here, also ask yourself if you have at least three different ways to wear this item with clothing already in your closet.
3. Staple items
Figure out what your staples are. Since everyone is different, it is important to figure out what your staples are in your closet. For example, mine are a denim jacket, leather jacket, good denim jeans (denim and black), white sneakers, versatile boots, etc. When I think of staple items, I think of very basic items that I can build off of, and create many different looks with. Once you figure those out, I would invest just a little bit more money into those items, so they will last longer.
4. Cheap accessories
Buy cheap accessories, this is key to really finishing an outfit. Personally, I prefer gold jewelry over silver, but certain outfits do look better with silver, so I make sure I have options. Target is a great place to get cheap jewelry.
Places to Shop
1. My first favorite place to shop is Princess Polly. A lot of the posts that I have include items from Princess Polly. This is not the cheapest place to shop, but it is definitely affordable. Something that everyone might not know is, Princess Polly is always having sells and they have a lot of social media influencers that are partnered up with them that have discount codes. The discounts are usually around 20% off. I follow a handful of influencers and use their code. Another option is to search on youtube, "Princess Polly hauls", and majority of the videos that show up are girls with discount codes, look in the description below the video.
2. The last place that I want to share is Shein. I know a lot of people probably know of this website, they have really taken off these past couple of years. For those of you that do not know, they have very cheap clothing, that are trendy, and they are always having sales. The clothing is not the best quality, but it is a great website to shop for clothing items that can build off of your staple items.
